The Skill enhancement and Rehabilitation Centre for Youth is a project is funded by Indian oil Corporation p.Ltd. as part of its Corporate social responsibility. Empower Pragati is the implementation partner, responsible for vocational training and placement of juveniles in conflict with law. Empower works closely with the State Child Protection society, Department of Women and Child Development that monitors the project and provides necessary support. The project was launched at Observation Home for Boys in Kingsway camp, Sewa Kutir in April 2014. Another centre was opened on 1st of May at Children Home for Boys in Children Home Complex, Alipur.
Empower provides training in four major domains: i) Retail ii) Supply chain management, iii) Mobile repairing and iv)Hospitality management. Theory and practical classes on trainee associate, along with the supplementary courses in Life Skill training, Basic English and Basic Computer followed in the training program. The methodology used is flexible and interesting, considering the trainees and their background. This includes group discussions, games, one-to-one interactions, audio visuals, extracurricular activities like painting and outdoor games as well.
The interest and participation of juveniles in this program is refreshingly surprising even though many of them only have basic education. They take special interest in computer classes, customer handling and life skill classes. As part of continuous career counseling, they explore the opportunity of earning and developing a positive outlook towards their future.
By end of July, we have trained 81 candidates from Kingsway camp & Alipur. Trainee who are coming from home for training are also provided travel expense through the department for continuing training at Kingsway.
We have so far placed 3 candidates: 1 from Kingsway and 2 from Alipur. All the candidates are placed in Home Credit India, a finance company based in Delhi. Empower is trying to provide placement opportunities to all the trainees.
Following is the brief on one of our trainees, Sandeep who recently got placed after training completion:
Sandeep was among the fist ones to enroll for the course that provided training for the job role of Retail Trainee Associate as he was excited and motivated to hear about the opportunity. During the course period, he was released from the observation home. He started working with a newspaper agency and distributed news papers in the morning. After his work, he would rush back to the training centre for classes. After training, Empower arranged for Sandeep to appear in an interview with Home Credit India Finance Private Limited. Sandeep was prepared by his trainers for interview – communication skills, presentation, self introduction, grooming etc. On the basis of his preparation and performance, he cleared the interview and got a three month apprenticeship with Home Credit. He is currently earning Rs. 6500 per month, plus incentives. Sandeep is now motivated to pursue his graduation through correspondence and wants to contribute his salary to his family and be a successful man.
